Cape Scott Wind Project

Cape Scott Wind Project is an example of Surespan Wind’s ability to form winning partnerships with other contractors. We have the ability to partner with other Surespan groups such as Ready Mix services.

The Client

The 99 MW Cape Scott Wind Farm on Vancouver Island is a civil engineering feat in the making for the building team of site developer and operator GDF SUEZ Energy North America.  Upon the project’s infrastructure completion, crews installed 33 kms (21 miles) of roadway, 23 bridges, 67 imbedded culverts, and 500 cross-drain culverts.

Our Work

We built bridges for the infrastructure portion of the project and supplied concrete for the foundations of the 80 meters towers. Each tower base had a 40 m3 concrete mudslab, then the rebar was installed by others (42mt). We then supplied 312m3 of 35mpa concrete for each tower.

Surespan had over 20 trucks and pups hauling aggregate for 12 hrs a day 6 days a week for two months. We supplied over 50,000 metric tonnes of aggregate for this project.

Challenges Overcome

The main challenge was supplying aggregate to site, due to its remote location. It was 90 min away on a very rough forestry road. One of the biggest challenges was the maintenance of the roads and keeping them on track, although the maintenance wasn’t ours, we still had to get our equipment in and out.
